I Love Oakleigh - Suburban Secrets

As told by Beth Johnson

Portman Street, Oakleigh

Across the road from Oakleigh Station and only 5 minutes drive from Chadstone Shopping Centre is Portman Street, Oakleigh. While there are many little gems to be found in Oakleigh, Portman Street is a good place to start.

Oakleigh Market:
Location: Between Portman and Chester Streets, Oakleigh.
Map The Oakleigh Market lies between Portman and Chester Streets, but you can enter from either street. It is home to butchers, delis, fishmongers, a fantastic grain and nut shop and the Oakleigh Fruit Market, which is the real hub of the place.

Kim Anh Fabrics
6a Portman St
Oakleigh
9568 7313

Kim Anh Fabrics has an extensive range of suit fabrics, wool, brocades and dress fabrics, with a smaller range of cotton fabrics, at very reasonable prices. It is also the place that I always visit for ribbons, rickrack, trimmings, laces, twill tape, elastic and buttons.

The Junk Shop
I have no idea what this place is actually called, but my family affectionately calls it “the junk shop”. Think 6 aisles overflowing with the cheapest stuff you will ever find in your entire life: crockery, washing baskets, food storage containers, cooking utensils, hardware, electrical cables, statues, toys, tea towels etc.

Niko’s Quality Cakes
25 Portman St
Oakleigh
9569 9802

Niko’s is Oakleigh’s answer to Brunetti and it is clearly the hub of Oakleigh. The quality of their cakes and biscuits are second to none. Definitely stop here for a bit of coffee and cake after your little Oakleigh shopping expedition. They also make cakes to order for very reasonable prices.

Golden Groceries
56 Portman St
Oakleigh
9563 1709
They stock almost every type of bean, lentil, grain, nut and noodle you can think of, and the same goes frothier spice range. They sell a small range of fresh Asian greens, herbs and mushrooms and frozen goods. There is also a growing section of reasonably priced organic products (noodles, tea, snacks). The staff are absolutely delightful, always happy and smiling.

Please feel free to add your Oakleigh tips in the comments section - and if you're headed to Oakleigh, be sure to print this page out!

Niko's is possibly the best place in the known universe. Fortunately I just live in Bentleigh, but I would well and truly drive across town for them.

Thanks Beth!
We used to live in Oakleigh and while I sadly didn't discover the fabric shop (or maybe just as well) I was a familiar customer at Niko's. Mmmmmmm!! Just a tip: Niko's have always been "about to install eftpos any day" but they still were cash-only last time I visited, so make sure your purse is generously stocked before you venture in.

I love Oakleigh!
Temcare Op Shop in Station Street is one of my very favourite shops.
I also love the grocery overflow (think NQR) shop up the top of Portman Street.
As for Nico's - yum! Worth a trip all on its own.
There's a nice wool shop on Chester Street, too.

Thank you to Beth for your Oakleigh highlights. Niko's is my local cake gallery! Also like Nights of Kabul in Portman St for Afghani food. For second-hand the Salvos in the main street (50 Atherton), the Red Cross around the corner in the mall, the strange little op shop in Station St and the Vinnies in Crewe Rd (off Warrigal) are worth checking out. Just 2 kns away near the Huntingdale underpass @ 1299 North Rd is a felt supplier www.jjdavies.com.au with craft felt priced from $8.75 to $12.60pm, 1800 wide.

I purchased a cake from Niko's and was less than impressed to fnd that what I had purchased was not what I had ordered. As this was upon cutting the cake, I phoned the store immediatly. After a few weeks of emailing back and forward and sending them images to prove that I had been supplied the wrong product, they offered me a $20 voucher or a packet of biscuits. I do not feel this was compensation for a 10 inch mud cake which cost $235. Customer service prior to handing over your money was great, however 4 weeks following my complaint, I am yet to receive a response. Would not recommend at all
